I have always found this software series to be relatively easy to navigate and while I'm certainly no expert, I've found the UI to be more responsive and less of a headache than other major brands in the same price point.

I had used, and enjoyed using, the Sony Movie Studio software for years and in various versions. I installed the software for both Movie Studio and DVD Architect Studio, and activated them with online connection with the activation codes provided. Software started fine, and worked well for making DVDs, but repeatedly stopped when rendering the Blu-Ray, providing an error message that it could not find a necessary file.
So, I went to the Sony online site for help. Here is where the drama starts. I entered all the necessary information into the Sony tech help window, including a lengthy description of the problem. Only after I did all that, and clicked to submit the help request, did the message appear in response that Sony no longer answers tech requests for this software.
A link sends one to the news release that shows that they sold this and other Sony software products to Magix on 20 May If you missed the earlier Sony email about their selling the software to Magix, like I did, then this was news. So, following links, I got to the Magix site, and registered there. They sent a welcoming message. Then I signed in to the Magix site and tried underscore "tried" to send them the same tech help request I had described earlier to Sony.
It turns out they do not have my Sony Movie Studio registered with them. Apparently that activation information did not transfer from Sony to Magix. The kicker is that you cannot describe a software problem to them unless you have the software registered with them.
So, I went to the part of the site where you register a product. They ask for the product's serial number, and I entered and re-entered the only number I had: The activation code. The Magix site did not recognize the code as being one of their products. There does not seem to be a way to contact Magix about this even more basic problem I believe they are in Germany.
Their web site, while quite modern in design, I personally find to be not user friendly if you have a request such as mine. I did return to the tech support request page. Recall that you cannot narrate the problem without having the product registered, but it turns out you can send what must be a blank request for assistance. That was four days ago the site responds that they try to respond within two days , but to date I have not received any contacts from Magix, including any recognition that I sent an assistance request at all.
If you need tech help on this product now, good luck. If someone has navigated this technical customer service morass with the new company successfully, I'd appreciate a map of how you did it. Meanwhile, if there is some other software that works well for my purposes, and has good customer service Sony's was quite good , please let me know. Your files are never really imported into this program.
You will find that out when you try to revisit a project and see that the program can not "find" your files. You will then have to search your computer to find the original location you imported the files from. Good luck with that. When I import files into an editing program I expect those files to be there even after a few months or years.
If there is a fix for this issue I can not find it anywhere. Lots of videos on finding lost files but not one on the files staying in this program. Amazon, do I have to give it a star to review it? I am a long time Movie Studio user and always thought it worked pretty well--never perfectly, but good enough for me.
I upgraded to 13 because I have an important project to finish for a retirement party tomorrow and I figured it was time. Nothing but trouble since.
Software hangs during editing, preview and rendering. I cannot render to any format. Keep getting an out of memory error. Went to Sony's tech support and followed instructions. At this point I have uninstalled and reinstalled to a new administrator profile. I won't tell you the user name for the new account, because it's not appropriate for all audiences.
Now I am in the registry editor. Really Sony? After 13 versions you don't have it right? By the way, I am tempted to call tech support, but it's fee based and the thought of giving these guys another dime nauseates me. If you make good software I could see paying for tech support. For this, they should pay me. While I was trying to get this to render I reviewed other video editors.

Got it done in time, but Sony owes me for at least 10 hours of wasted life. Not a debt I ever expect to be satisfied. Notice the picture of the product isn't Sony. It's real name has been photoshopped out of the top right of the box. You don't get Sony Movie Studio with the purchase. I tried submitting a review with the name of what you do get, and it was declined. It's a scan. Most of the reviews for this product conclude that it is difficult to use. I would agree somewhat with that assessment, particularly for those who have never used such software before and are looking for a one-click-and-done solution.
Prior to purchasing this I had been using Nero Platinum which was easy to use, but was buggy and produced horrible results. Sony includes lots of nice features in Movie Studio if you can find them such as the ability to set levels and perform color correction.
DVD Architect can be tedious to use. I would suggest that potential buyers download and install the fully functional unlike Adobe Premier Elements trial version and use it for 30 days before purchasing. The reason for the original review was because, although the software is beautiful streamline and pretty much free of crashes, it was rendering all my movies without sound.
I finally got connected with Sony support and they resolved the issue: So, for all of you who are experiencing the same thing, here's what you do: Although, I find this setup a little illogical, unlike other programs, this one has the rendering settings to default WITHOUT sound. You have to go into an advanced setting to render with sound. About the software: I'm comparing it to Premiere and Pinnacle Studio.
The software is bloated and crashes in the middle of every project. They have a 14 day window for customer service and , after that, charge you if you need to speak to them. Pinnacle used to be a great software program and then they made it overly complex and overloaded with features. Adobe Premiere is very professional and loaded with cool features, but it's got a very unfriendly user interface for the "average Joe" who wants to edit cool looking home movies.
SONY's program is very clean looking. The buttons are big and the user interface is not cluttered. You want a transition, click one. The rendering is a bit slower than the other programs, but who cares? As long as it renders right. Once I got connected with Customer service, I have to say, I was really impressed. The guy qualified the problem, he looked at a sample file and came back with the answer i needed. It was very easy to install and I had no problems whatsoever.
When the trial was over, a box popped up telling me so and asking if I wanted to buy it. While using it, it wasn't slow, and I had no problems when importing or exporting media. However, I don't know what Sony was trying to do with this one.
And honestly, I believe that Windows Movie Maker is far more efficient then this program is. Most programs are pretty standard with certain terms, icons, they way certain thing work or move. But this was just bad. I only got this because at the time, I had a brand new laptop with no editing software, so I just needed something easy to use that would get the job done. This was NOT easy to use.
I had no idea where anything was or how the controls worked as it was far different from any other program. It barely got the job done, and it was even very good.
I did what I could with my footage, but I ended up with something that wasn't color corrected, poor transitions, and poor audio. I never worked with something so bad before and I can only hope to never work with something like this again. I do not recommend this. One person found this helpful. So far so good.
Limited functions, just your basic editor. I got it because my computer broke and I had to use an older system till I get a new one. With an older system nothing I had would run on it. This will run fairly stable on my old computer and get the basic job done. I am purchasing the full product and will keep using it into the future as a basic editor for things on my laptop or when I am on a system that can't run programs like premiere.
If you are a novice editor or just trying to do some stuff for personal use then this is the tool for you. I'm your "average" video maker. I wasn't looking for something that experts use, mainly I upload videos of my cats to YouTube and an occasional video review here on Amazon. I didn't care for any of the Corel or Pinnacle video products as those seem too complicated.
